Airway Balloon Dilation Sizing Calculator

Calculate appropriate balloon dilation sizes for airway procedures based on patient age

Sizing Formula

Formula: Take the outer diameter of an age appropriate endotracheal tube, and add 1mm for the larynx, and 2mm for the trachea

Calculation Method

Patient Age Selection

Clinical Considerations

Gradual Dilation: Start with smaller balloon sizes and gradually increase to goal diameter to minimize trauma

Anatomical Variations: Individual patient anatomy may require adjustment from guideline recommendations

Stenosis Severity: Degree and location of stenosis should guide balloon selection and inflation pressure

Monitoring: Continuous endoscopic visualization during dilation is essential for safety

Complications: Be prepared to manage potential complications including bleeding, perforation, and airway edema
